Millennials taking retail jobs at jobs at growing rates

After graduating with a degree in television writing and production from Columbia College Chicago last May, Caitlin O’Malley moved to New York to pursue her dream of writing a hit television comedy. The 22-year old landed a job at the iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza, home of “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and other shows. But O’Malley found herself working in NBC’s gift shop.

Instead of her dream job, O’Malley works retail, like many other millennials with college degrees: the NBC Studio Tour box office by day and blogs about comedy by night.

More than 63 percent of Generation Y workers have college degrees, yet the most commonly reported jobs were in retail, according to a recent study by Millennial Brand and PayScale.
